London is renowned for pomp and pageantry bringing in thousands of visitors every day. No matter where you are from, who doesn’t appreciate military tradition & precision, uniforms, horses and bands?

Capturing the action of Changing of the Guard as it happens from the Barracks to the Palaces, getting sharp shots and being in the right place at the right time is how this tour works. We don’t hang around waiting in the one spot for not much to happen. It means we’ll be moving quite quickly, dodging the crowds and keeping up with the soldiers on foot, the band or the horses. It’s not a race, but we aren’t dawdling either.

You will need a zoom lens (50mm +) and to keep one eye & ear on the guide who will tell you the next location and when we are moving.

General Information - Changing of the Guard

Photography On The Move are dynamic tours, exploring and photographing London with its wonderful mix of street photography, people, architecture, landscapes and impromptu opportunities.

Are you visiting London for the first time and want to see all the major attractions and get the best London photos you can? Or do you know your way around London, but want some help with your camera and need photography instruction? These are 4 hour instructional walking photography tours, led by a professional photographer and we have a few locations to choose from.

Groups sizes are small (maximum of 6 people) so you will get individual attention. We’ll help you get the best out of your camera so you’ll go home with photos to be proud of, increased knowledge on how your camera works and more creative ideas for your photography.

Each Photography On the Move Tour will start with a brief talk about the main points in photography, how to get those shots with the blurred or sharp background (Aperture), how to freeze or blur motion (Shutter Speed), Burst Mode, what to consider with the variable London light (ISO), focus points and how to find all this on your camera. For the Changing of the Guards tour, we’ll spend time over a cup of coffee inside a café (we pay), going over the essentials of photography and your camera to make sure you are ready to capture the action.

The photographer guide will help you get the best from your camera, give ideas for creative photography and how to make the most of any situation and environment. They love what they do and their enthusiasm is infectious. You’ll have a great time and walk away inspired by photography and in love with London. Plus, the guides will also give you snippets of information on the area. So, it’s double value!

The tour is suitable for compact cameras, Bridge cameras and SLRs. For this tour you will need a zoom lens of 50mm or more. Tablets & phones may not have enough zoom capability. Please ensure you are satisfied with the zoom on your equipment before booking this tour. Please note depending on the model of your phone or tablet, there may be a limit on what we can teach or your equipment can achieve. It’s crucial that you also bring a portable charger as batteries drain quickly when taking photos.

To give you the most assistance on the tour we need to know the make and model of your camera or phone when you make the booking.

We’ll also give you a booklet of photography notes and information to refer to plus some exercises so you can keep practising in your own time.

Please note, these tours are not as intensive as a Beginner Photography Course. The skills you learn on this tour will be tailored to suit the tour and location.

Please read the Payment Terms and Conditions before booking any tour.

Tour Details - Changing of the Guard

On this tour, you will need to be relatively fit. We’ll move quickly, so you must be nimble to avoid crowds while keeping up with the soldiers as they march to and from the Barracks, Buckingham Palace and St James Palace. It isn’t a race, but it isn’t a dawdle either.

Group sizes: limited to 6 people

The guide: Will be wearing a red and white t’shirt or a red fleece/jacket with Hairy Goat written on the back

Meeting location: Underneath the Petty France street sign opposite St James tube station. Take the exit marked Petty France. The street sign Petty France is on the tall grey building at head height.

Start time: 9.30am

Length of time: 4 hours

Finish location: See the individual tour, but it will be near a tube station

Please note: We may not finish exactly on time, because if there’s a photo opportunity, we’d rather take longer to get the photos.

Tripod: Please DON’T bring or hire a tripod or a monopod for this tour as you won’t have time nor the space to use it. There are also too many visitors and security restrictions in the areas.

Cost: £110 per person. Can a friend or family member come along free of charge if they aren’t using a camera? Sorry, no. Everyone on all the tours and workshops/courses pay full price. Think of it as a theatre show, train fare or plane ride. If you want to go, you need to pay.

Bring: your fully charged camera, plenty of space on your memory cards/film, and a spare battery if possible. Dress for 4 hours outside. If you have your camera manual, please bring that too. Bring a
drink and a snack, plus a rain jacket, just in case. In summer I also recommend a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Wear comfortable walking shoes too. The tour will be held rain or shine.

Equipment: you will need a zoom lens of 50mm or more on your camera. If you aren’t sure what this means please email me your camera & lens details. Using a phone or tablet: They are not really suitable for this tour unless your phone or tablet has a great zoom. Batteries drain very quickly so we strongly recommend bringing a portable charger.

Please read the Payment Terms and Conditions before booking any tour.

Once the tour is booked and paid, we’ll send you an automated confirmation email with start time and
meeting locations.

Please note, the schedule for Changing the Guards tour are set by the British Army a few weeks before, so we cannot take long term bookings as we cannot guarantee the date. Please keep checking this page for the newest dates. The full march can be cancelled as late as 10:45am that day and there will be less activity. If this happens we will still provide a full tour and photograph the reduced Guard activity and spend more time at the other locations.

Places we aim to cover: St James Park Army Barracks, Buckingham Palace, Horseguards, The Mall, Admiralty Arch, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, London Eye

Please note: London is a very dynamic city and some of these locations may not be accessible on the day due to road closures, other events or the crowds making it difficult or a safety & security risk. If that happens, we’ll find other interesting locations instead. Various well-known buildings (including Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey) have long term repair works taking place and scaffolding is present but we will do our best to obtain creative shots.

Over winter the Changing of the Guards is held every 2nd day. In summer it’s daily. If the Guard Change is cancelled, due to weather or other events, we will cover the same areas, but will also endeavour to cover other locations within walking distance. We don’t aim to be at the front of the palace for photos as that requires too much time waiting. Instead, we’ll photograph the soldiers coming up from the Barracks to Buckingham Palace and down to St James park after the ceremony and continue from there.
